Ficus Lyrata vs Ficus Elastica

 I want to show you how fast ficus lyrata and Ficus elastica have grown within a year. 
I got both of them one year ago. F. Lyrata, also called fiddle-leaf fig and Ficus Elastica or rubberplant are from the same family and genus. However, they grow differently. The rubber plant can deal with less light. I put mine at the north window. I didn‘t see any bad signs.
When l put my ficus Lyrata near the north window. I thought it was happy, after l saw that some leaves have little brown spots. I have learned that it is a sign that my ficus Lyrata needs more light. 

After having them for a year, l have noticed how much they grow. Surprisingly, my rubber plant has thrived faster than my fiddle-leaf fig. While the rubber plant already has grown six new leaves since l got it. The fiddle-leaf fig has only grown three new leaves.

I really get the tropical vibes having both plants at home. Everytime, I see these plants it feels like home. The big leaves of my fiddle-leaf fig remind me of the catappa trees. Most of my plants are attached to memories. In my parent's garden in Indonesia, they is a tree similiar to the rubber plant, names syzygium cumini. We call it "pohon duwet". It bears fruits, and they taste good. Most parts of the tree are also used for medical purposes.
Rubber plant is native to Southeast Asia, while fiddle-leaf fig to western Africa and both grow in the tropical rainforest. 


One year summary;

August 2019 to September 2020 

The length of each stem (in cm) and the number of leaves;

F. Lyrata; 3 leaves, 6 cm 

F. Elastica; 6 leaves (7th leaf will open soon, as can be seen in the picture), 14 cm

As you can see, the rubber plant grows faster than the fiddle-leaf fig. Within one year, my rubber plant has grown two times faster than my fiddle-leaf fig. Of course, the light condition plays also an important role. So, I will do an experiment again by placing my fiddle-leaf fig directly in front of the window as I do to my rubber plant. Let's see, if this plant could grow faster.
