How to Pot Plants 2: Monstera

my Monstera after repotting

Plant lovers!
I am back again with the topic of potting plants. In the second part, I will show you how to pot or repot Monstera deliciosa known as Swiss Cheese Plant.
In general, you repot your plants every one or two years. But it depends on your plants, some plants grow very fast, then they need more space to grow. If you are not sure when you should repot your plants, you can check the plants by pulling them up from their pots carefully. If plants can be pulled easily the roots fill out the whole pot so that the substrate is lifted along with them, the plant has stayed in the pot for too long. It's time to repot!
The best time to repot plants is in the early spring because it's the growing phase for plants. However, even if it's not yet spring, if you see that the bottom of the plant pot is filled with roots as you can see in the picture, it means that you must repot your plant immediately. Usually, for repotting plants, you will need some bigger pots than former ones. Plants should have enough space to grow beautifully.
So, to repot my Monstera, I already prepared coconut coir and mixed it with perlite and plant granulate, I also gathered the pot, some water, and tools.

Step 1
Pull the plant from the pot. Please be careful.
If the roots are holding on to the pot too fast, you can destroy the pot by cutting it.

Step 2
Remove as much of the the old substrate as you can. I didn't remove all the old substrate because I don't want to destroy the roots.

Step 3
Fill a quarter of your chosen substrate in the pot, then put the Monstera in there. After that, continue filling the pot with the substrate little by little until it covers the top line of the plant pot. In general, it's good to choose a substrate that provides good drainage.

Step 4
Water your lovely Monstera.

I Put my Monstera in the plant basket

So, finished! It's not difficult, is it? However, it can be a lot of work if you have many plants in your place. I repotted almost all my plants in the spring this year. I remember it was from 11am until 11pm. Sometimes, if you often propagate your plants, your repotting work will never end. It's so exhausting, but I still had fun because, in the end, you will feel happy to see your plants have enough space to grow and repotting makes them grow bushier and bigger.
Stay healthy, xoxo Rita
